Assessing Your Needs Before Your New Commercial Flooring is Installed

ASSESSING YOUR NEEDS BEFORE YOUR NEW COMMERCIAL FLOORING IS INSTALLED

As 2016 begins to wrap up, you may be considering a change in your commercial flooring for the new year. Whether the change is needed to fix an issue or simply to enhance the atmosphere of your facility, it is imperative that you assess your needs before the installation process takes place. What are your Needs? Define your needs by asking yourself the following questions:

How does my current flooring situation effect the installation of my future flooring?

You must ask yourself this question for various reasons. First one, the type of flooring you currently have will affect the amount of time it will take to complete the full scope of the installation project.

For example, carpeting is easily liftable, while removing tile is a more prolonged, tedious process. The amount of time your daily organizational operations will be placed on hold will vary depending on your current flooring.

Do I plan on redoing anything else within my facility?

Especially if you are redoing your flooring in efforts to create a new look for the new year, you should decide what you want changed before you flooring is installed.

For example, if you are going to want to change the color of your walls to go in accordance with your flooring of choice, decide and create a schedule that allows the painting project to be done before hand. Painting after your flooring is installed will not only up the risk of the flooring getting stained, but will also force you to spend more time and money on protectives coverings to shield your new flooring.

What needs to be removed and how will it be removed?

DO NOT decide this the night before your installment date. Make sure you properly asses what needs to be moved or removed from the building, and what it will take to remove it (size, weight, etc.).

If you decide this at the last minute, it many result in a situation where you are not prepared and unexpected costs may arise. Failure to plan ahead may also cause you to ask your employees to help at the last minute. The problem isn’t that they wouldn’t be happy to assist, the problem is that they could get injured, which is why it is always best to have a plan.

Before any installation process begins, you must define the required pre-installation work needed to execute the job correctly and effectively. Poor pre-installation planning can result in numerous predicaments for your organization including:

  • Postponement of organizational / system-level tasks for an undesirable amount of time
  • Employee / stakeholder / consumer injury occurs
  • Breech of the Department of Health’s building codes
  • Wasted time and money
  • Stress and aggravation
