Safety

No remarks

March 29, 2012 under Transition Issues

We recently reviewed our safety processes to minimize installer injury and lost time due to injuries. Flooring installers utilize knives to cut the materials they are installing. The blades are razor sharp and can easily cut the worker. Knife safety is therefore of paramount importance to both the worker and the employer alike.

Ironically, an important part of knife safety is to make sure that the worker uses blades that are sharp. Using a dull blade can be very dangerous. A dull blade cannot enter that material the same way as a sharp blade can, and this is one of the causes of accidental knife slippage.

Another key to avoiding injuries is to use a holster for the knife. Laying down a knife onto the work surface can be a hazard. Putting a knife into a holster instead of laying the knife down on the work surface can prevent the accidental cutting of a hand or finger.

There are knives available that can retract after each cut. One manufacturer that makes a fine knife with this feature is from Martorusa. http://www.martorusa.com/Information/Smart-Knives

These retractable knifes are of excellent quality. The only draw back we found with that knife is that it doesn’t come with carpet blades. They offer two blades right now – a utility blade and a hook blade.

Finally, the use of Kevlar cut resistant gloves is one step towards minimizing or preventing accidental knife cuts. We highly recommend the use of gloves.

Rubber Stair Treads for Greater Slip Resistance

No remarks

March 15, 2012 under Carpet, News

Commercial Flooring & Interior Concepts, CFIC, just completed the replacement of over a thousand stair treads in three buildings in Plainsboro NJ.

The nine stairwells were completed over the course of three weeks on both regular hours and weekends. The new Johnsonite rubber stair treads offered greater safety features than the client previously enjoyed. The use of a sand paper insert on the nose of the tread provided greater slip resistance. With the average slip fall claim costing corporations thousands of dollars, it makes sense to review the products that are in a facility to make sure they are the safest possible.

CFIC can help navigate the various choicest to make sure they are the best available.

Carpet Border Height Difference Issue

No remarks

August 7, 2010 under Transition Issues

Sometimes two different carpets are specified for a field and a border. The heights of these two products may not neccessarily be the same. If that is the case, the client may want the heights to be the same. In order to accomplish this task, there are a couple choices. One choice is to glue VCT tile underneath the product that is lower than the other to raise the height up. The VCT can then be ramped down from the 1/8 height to nothing using a portland based patching compound such as Ardex featherfinish. Another option may be to use Johnsonite levelers. This vinyl product will take a height variance and ramp it down to nothing. The beauty of this product is that you can cut it to the height you need to correct and there is no down time waiting for patching compounds to dry.
